The visual clinical examination of newborns in maternity is a crucial step in their care, enabling the detection of potential anomalies or pathologies, some of which may require urgent therapeutic intervention. This step is often the most challenging and delicate as it involves a subjective component linked to the caregiver’s experience.
The evaluation primarily relies on the child’s facial expressions, crying, movements, and posture. Recent computer science advances have led to the development of increasingly precise and sophisticated facial recognition systems. Systems for analyzing movement and sound have also evolved in the context of video games and consumer applications.
These computer-based vision and hearing systems allow the recognition of facial expressions and motor skills. This project aims to develop a computerized clinical evaluation system for newborns that considers the three primary criteria of various clinical scales: facial expressions, crying, posture, and movement.
